January 19th holds a very special place in our hearts here at Kernel Season’s! And no, it’s not our birthday. ¬†It’s National Popcorn Day, of course! We’re sharing two quick DIY tricks to help you celebrate National Popcorn Day at home with items you already have in your kitchen! ¬†It doesn’t get much easier than that.

#1 The good ol’ paper bag

When popping popcorn, not many think to grab a good ol’ paper bag that we all seem to have lying around. ¬†But this is one of our favorite ways to make popcorn at home. Not only does it take 2 minutes, start to finish, it comes out perfect, every time.¬†

What you’ll need:Popping popcorn in a paper bag

– 1 lunch size paper bag

Р 1/4 cup popping kernels

How to pop:

– Add 1/4 cup of popcorn kernel into your paper bag

– Fold over the top of the bag 2-3 times so the kernels don’t pop out

– Set in microwave and cook for 2 minutes or until popping starts to slow down

Easy, easy, easy! Popping your popcorn in a paper bag gives you delicious, plain popcorn that you can do wonders with! Add a little Movie Theater Butter and your favorite seasoning, then sit back, relax and enjoy your family movie night!

#2 Your stove and best pot

If you like to take more of the traditional, classic way of popping popcorn, grab the biggest pot you have.  Popping popcorn on the stove is a great and delicious way to get ready for family movie night. Not only will the kiddos be at your side waiting for their movie snack, but will love waiting and listening for the first kernel to POP!

What you’ll need:Popping popcorn on the stove

РThe largest pot you have

Р 1/4 cup Movie Theater Butter (or any type of oil you like, canola, coconut, etc.)

Р 2/3 cup popping kernels

How to pop:

Р Add oil and 3 kernels to your large pot

– Cover and place over medium high heat until all 3 kernels pop

РOnce popped, take 3 kernels out and add the rest of the popping kernels

Р Cover and remove from heat for 30 seconds

РPlace pot back on heat, shaking occasionally until the popping slows down (about 2 minutes)

– Remove from heat and remove lid to allow steam to escape

And voila! Delicious, warm, crispy¬†popcorn ready in a flash. Add extra butter or your favorite popcorn seasoning flavor to really top it off. Movie night just got easier and way less expensive! (Yes movie theater popcorn is delicious, but just wait until your try your own homemade popcorn! ūüėČ )¬†

popcorn bar (2)
If you’re planning a wedding, baby shower, birthday party or really any celebration– check out this cool idea for a Do-It-Yourself¬†Popcorn Bar.

This set up is VERY easy (most of these materials we got from Walmart and Michael’s¬†for pretty cheap and you know who we got the seasoning from ūüôā ) and will serve a lot of people on a relatively tight budget.

Want to make one for your next party? Here’s how we did it:popcorn bar part 2

STEP ONE: Find your space and figure out how to use it.

Depending on the length of your table and how much seasoning/popcorn/serving containers you’re using, you’ll need to create some different layers of eight on your popcorn bar to make it full and pretty. We used wooden crates, metal washtubs and wooden baskets for this.

STEP TWO: Think of a theme and get decor.

We were feeling rustic so we went for metal, wood and chalk boards for a cute home-y feel.

STEP THREE: Find what you’ll serve the popcorn in and how you’ll serve it.¬†

We chose to pre-pop our popcorn and leave it out with a scoop and bags. While it is not pictured in this image, we would also suggest a small crock pot of warm  movie theater butter and/or popcorn butter spritzer to help the seasoning stick. To remain in the theme of choice, you can even cover these with your own paper/decor and use different labels.

toppings for DIY popcorn bar

STEP FOUR: Decide what you’ll serve as toppings.

At Kernel Season’s we have 15 different popcorn seasonings in addition to some other delicious toppings like Drizzle Brittle. In these jars (about the size of an 8 oz mug), we used three jars/flavor. Keep in mind some flavors might be more popular than others (everyone loves White Cheddar, for example), so make sure you have enough stocked up. We also chose to add some candy¬†mix-ins to the bar as well.¬†

How to make a signage for a DIY Popcorn Bar

STEP FIVE: Create labels and signs to show your guests what to do.

It was so easy to find stick on chalkboard labels that worked GREAT and even came with chalk. We also decided to add a “Popcorn Bar” sign to further explain how to use the table.

Once you’ve set up your table, sit back, relax and watch the guests run over to try it. The best part about a popcorn bar is that it’s fun for all ages. People will have a blast creating their very own popcorn and BONUS: this could totally count as your party favor! ūüôā¬†

Have any ideas on how to expand? Let us know below in the comments– we’d love to hear from you!¬†
