Celebrate National Popcorn Day

January 19th holds a very special place in our hearts here at Kernel Season’s! And no, it’s not our birthday.  It’s National Popcorn Day, of course! We’re sharing two quick DIY tricks to help you celebrate National Popcorn Day at home with items you already have in your kitchen!  It doesn’t get much easier than that.

#1 The good ol’ paper bag

When popping popcorn, not many think to grab a good ol’ paper bag that we all seem to have lying around.  But this is one of our favorite ways to make popcorn at home. Not only does it take 2 minutes, start to finish, it comes out perfect, every time.

What you’ll need:Popping popcorn in a paper bag

– 1 lunch size paper bag

–  1/4 cup popping kernels

How to pop:

– Add 1/4 cup of popcorn kernel into your paper bag

– Fold over the top of the bag 2-3 times so the kernels don’t pop out

– Set in microwave and cook for 2 minutes or until popping starts to slow down

Easy, easy, easy! Popping your popcorn in a paper bag gives you delicious, plain popcorn that you can do wonders with! Add a little Movie Theater Butter and your favorite seasoning, then sit back, relax and enjoy your family movie night!

#2 Your stove and best pot

If you like to take more of the traditional, classic way of popping popcorn, grab the biggest pot you have.  Popping popcorn on the stove is a great and delicious way to get ready for family movie night. Not only will the kiddos be at your side waiting for their movie snack, but will love waiting and listening for the first kernel to POP!

What you’ll need:Popping popcorn on the stove

– The largest pot you have

–  1/4 cup Movie Theater Butter (or any type of oil you like, canola, coconut, etc.)

–  2/3 cup popping kernels

How to pop:

–  Add oil and 3 kernels to your large pot

– Cover and place over medium high heat until all 3 kernels pop

– Once popped, take 3 kernels out and add the rest of the popping kernels

–  Cover and remove from heat for 30 seconds

– Place pot back on heat, shaking occasionally until the popping slows down (about 2 minutes)

– Remove from heat and remove lid to allow steam to escape

And voila! Delicious, warm, crispy popcorn ready in a flash. Add extra butter or your favorite popcorn seasoning flavor to really top it off. Movie night just got easier and way less expensive! (Yes movie theater popcorn is delicious, but just wait until your try your own homemade popcorn! 😉 )

Can I add the seasoning powder right to the oil when popping? I have a large commercial style popper

Matt - January 22, 2017 - 2:56 pm

Hi Kathy. No, our seasonings do not need to be refrigerated. It is best to keep the seasoning in a cool, dry place, away from the oven and stove, for this can cause the seasoning to clump. Please let us know if this helps!

Kernel Season’s - February 14, 2017 - 4:11 pm

Hi Matt,

We recommend adding the seasoning after the popping process. If you add the seasoning into the popping kettle, you will lose some of the flavor. You can use our butter spritzer after popping and then shake on your favorite seasoning flavor to help the seasoning stick to every delicious kernel. Let us know if this helps!
